What’s new in Vascular Surgery?

Over the last decade, vascular surgery has evolved into a specialty of minimally invasive procedures known as Endovascular surgery. Over 70% of patients with peripheral vascular disease (PVD) can now be treated using endovascular techniques. Endovascular surgery involves the use of wires, catheters, balloons and stents that are inserted into the artery or vein and no incisions are needed.

These procedures are well tolerated and do not routinely require general anesthesia. Patients usually stay only one night in the hospital and are back to their daily activities within a few days time. Even very complex problems such as abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) which historically required large open operations, can now be done using stent-graft technology. Some of the procedures that we currently perform using Endovascular techniques include:

  • Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) Repair (EVAR)
  • Lower extremity Angioplasty (Balloon) and Stenting (for claudication or for wounds caused by diminished blood flow to the legs – PVD)
  • Renal Artery Angioplasty and Stenting (for renal artery stenosis)
  • Mesenteric artery Angioplasty and Stenting (for intestinal artery blockage)
  • Carotid Artery Angioplasty/Stenting (for carotid artery stenosis or stroke)
  • Atherectomy (Shaving off atherosclerotic plaque from within the artery)
  • Aneurysm embolizations (The exclusion of arterial aneurysms)
  • Dialysis access revision

Although the majority of our patients can be treated with these minimally invasive procedures, there is still a role for open vascular surgery and many patients may be better served with these more traditional operations including lower extremity bypass. Your PSA vascular surgeons are equipped to perform either open or endovascular surgery and all of the options will be discussed with you during the office visit.
